Rock Springs: Gritty Realities by Richard Ford

I’d put Richard Ford’s Rock Springs in a need-to-read list for every serious writer of literary fiction. rock-springs

The stories in this collection are visceral, hard-boiled, and wash over the reader like they happened in a memory. I’d put them in the same field as Carver and Denis Johnson, Ron Rash, and others in that field.

Talking about this collection is weird for two reasons: 1) I read it more than a month ago, and 2) The standalone stories, in sequence, blend together to form this powerful narrative of the American West’s down-on-their-luck best.

If you’re looking for something enjoyable, light on the surface, heavy underneath, Rock Springs should be your next pick.
